Call us in Shreveport at 318.222.4282!

Stop reflux at its source.

Reflux (also called Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or GERD) is caused by a weak muscle in your esophagus called the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) that allows acid and bile to flow back from the stomach into the esophagus, causing damage to the lining of the esophagus, throat and lungs.

LINX is easy to understand and love because it is simple. LINX is a small, flexible ring of magnets that opens to allow food and liquid down, then closes to prevent stomach contents from moving up. Simple as that.

The LINX® Advantage

Minimally Invasive

Short outpatient procedure

No alteration to the stomach

Resume normal activity in days

No special diet

Generally expected user experience*

LINX® is implanted using a surgical technique called laparoscopy. Dr. Merriman with Surgical Specialists of Shreveport is a recognized leader in laparoscopy having completed no less than 4000 procedures in Shreveport. This technique uses small incisions in the abdominal wall to access the area around the esophagus where the device will be placed.
After one day of liquids only, Dr. George Merriman will instruct patients to return to a normal diet as quickly as tolerated. This will include an 8 week period of time where a small meal is eaten every 2-3 hours during waking hours. This helps the body adapt to LINX®.
Dr. Merriman of Surgical Specialists of Shreveport will give specific instructions for each patient, but generally able to return to non-strenuous activity within a couple of days. After 6 weeks full activity and lifting can resume assuming Dr. Merriman has given the patient clearance.
Patients who have received LINX® have reported the ability to belch and vomit. In Dr. Merriman's experience with his patients at Surgical Specialists of Shreveport, patient who follow post operative eating instructions which allow the esophagus to properly adapt to the new device have no issue with regular functions like belching and vomiting.
LINX® is designed to be a lifelong implant. The cases and wires are constructed of titanium, which has a long history of use in permanent medical implants. LINX® uses permanent magnets that are designed not to wear out. Call Dr. Merriman in Shreveport at Surgical Specialists of Shreveport for a consultation to discuss this life changing solution to reflux.
LINX® should not affect airport security. All patients will be provided with an implant card to have available in the event an issue arises.
A small number of patients have reported sensations in the area of LINX®. It is not known if this is the device or the result of surgery in the area. These sensations have gone away over time.
There are two versions of the LINX device. One is safe in MRI scanning machines up to 0.7T, the other is safe to 1.5T. You should discuss the MRI scanning options with your doctor prior to deciding on treatment with LINX®.

He entertains himself with his inborn love of music (he has been an accomplished drummer since the age of 12), movies (especially sci-fi and westerns), speaking (he was the national college debate champion of 1983) and the Green Bay Packers (having made several "pilgrimages" to the frozen tundra of Lambeau field). He and his wife of more than 20 years, Katy, now run the medical practice together keeping the highest standards of patient care and service as their top priority.

Dr. Merriman's well-rounded life experiences foster his commitment to treating his patients as more than their disease by following a simple philosophy — always treat people as an end unto themselves, and never as a means to an end.

Patient Testimonials

“I lived with GERD for about nine years.”

“It was horrible, you couldn’t enjoy the foods that you really liked to eat, and as soon as you ate it, you knew that 25-30 minutes later you were going to be struck with horrible heartburn, chest pain and reflux. When my GERD got so out of control that I could barely function at work, I could barely function at home, it was affecting not only myself, but my husband and my daughter, my mom and my dad. I just knew that we needed to make a change and make a change very quickly.”

“I feel a thousand times better. I’m not on any medications. I never use antacids, PPIs, or anything like that anymore.”

“LINX was definitely the best decision I’ve ever made, for my health. It’s not only increased my activity, it’s increased my well-being. I want to do more things outside of work because I feel better. Walking the dog, going to Pilates, skiing, playing soccer, those are the things that I really enjoy doing and I can do it now.”

“It came to a point with the GERD that my whole life, all I was worrying about is what I had to do to make it through the day.”

“I was a different person after I had the LINX System done. My day-to-day life since, after LINX, I go to bed at night, I can sleep all night and I’m in a deep sleep.”

“I eat what I want to eat for breakfast. I go through the day, I’m not exhausted.”

“I’m like a new person now since I had the LINX System put in.”

“I first learned that I had acid reflux in 2008.”

“I had been treating myself with over-the-counter medicines, but they were not too effective. I had a constant sensation in the back of my throat. It was always burning.”

“After having the LINX System installed, I can immediately tell a difference. The burning sensation in my throat eased and eventually, completely disappeared.”

“I have no problems eating any foods that I want. The acid reflux symptoms are completely gone and this happened without having an invasive surgery that I would have had, if I had chosen other methods.”

“I lived with GERD diagnosed, for at least seven years. As the years progressed, it got worse and it became a steamroller, it just kept building and building.”

“GERD took my life away basically; it took my day-to-day living away. It took my enjoyment of day-to-day living away.”

“Since I had LINX, I have a life. I’m able to go out to eat. I’m able to sit and enjoy my meals.“

“I can get on the floor and play with our grandchildren. All things I couldn’t do before LINX. LINX has given me my life back.”
